Acolytes are typically in the
fifth, sixth or seventh
grade in the Church School. Acolytes
wear a black surplice and white cotta, and they serve in pairs.
They light and extinguish the candles at the beginning and end of
the service and carry the torches in procession.
They also assist at the offertory with the offering plates and the
elements (the bread and wine) and at Communion with the opening and
closing of the altar rail gates. Servers are typically in the eighth grade (Confirmation Class) or older. They wear a white alb and cincture (robe belt) and carry the processional cross. They assist the priests with the preparation of the Communion table, collect the offering plates into the alms basin, and assist at Communion by standing ready to replenish the chalice from the flagon of wine.
