Stewardship 2009

Treasure for the Heart, the Soul, and the Mind

We offer our sincere thanks to all of the Captains and Parishioners who sent in their pledges during the Annual Pledge Drive.  In order to draw up the parish budget for the forthcoming year, it is extremely important that we hear from everyone who is still considering a pledge.  Funds to fulfill your gift may be paid through December 31, 2009.

If you are unsure how to pledge, or if you would like further information about Stewardship   2009, please contact either Elliot Davis or Rick Weed, Stewardship Co-Chairs.  We would be glad to assist you in every way possible.

The strength of our parish depends on you.  Please be generous as you consider your gift to Stewardship 2009.

 Yours in Christ,

 Elliot Bostwick Davis                                                       Rick Weed

Advent Series 2008

Thinking with the Heart:

Drawing near to Christ through the prayer of Advent and Christmas

The texts, hymns and anthems of Advent and Christmas are profound and beautiful.  Simply using them as points of meditation, as a springboard for your conversation with God, will bring you more deeply into the truth of your faith.  If you would like some additional help, please join us for two evenings with Brother Geoffrey Tristram, SSJE, who will lead us in an exploration of Thinking with the Heart: Drawing near to Christ through the prayer of Advent and Christmas.  The series will take place December 3rd and 10th, at the Rectory, beginning with a light supper at 6:30.  Please sign up using the sheets on the table next to the door of the Rector's study.

flower2_white_100.jpgCelebrate this Christmas with a Gift of Poinsettiasflower2_white_100.jpg

Did you know that this year the beautiful poinsettias, which adorn the Church of the Redeemer at Christmas, will be made possible by many financial donations from our Parishioners?

Our Christmas flower donations are made as a lovely way to remember those who are special to us, but gifts may be made “in celebration of” an event or important milestone as well as “in honor of,” “in memory of,” or “in thanksgiving for” loved ones.

Names that are received by December 21st will be printed in the Christmas worship service leaflets.

We suggest $50 for the first listing, $10 for each additional one, but, of course will welcome ANY AMOUNT.

We hope that you will contribute to the glorious celebration of Christmas at the Redeemer with a memorial gift.    The results of your generosity will be enjoyed by all who visit us at Christmas time.

 Thank you.

Please fill in the form below and return it either to the Church office or by mail to Mrs. Nina Moriarty, Treasurer of the Altar Guild, 214 Heath Street, Chestnut Hill, MA  02467.

Church School at the Redeemer

Dear Church School Families,

There is a fun and worthwhile church school field trip/service project planned for all children in church school age 5 and up!

On SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7 at 10 am, all children age 5 and older will go to the Sophia Snow Place retirement home in West Roxbury and share our anticipation of Advent by singing Christmas Carols to the residents.  We will leave by bus at 10 am with any interested children who have a permission slip and will return to the Redeemer no later than 12 noon.  Mary Reynders and 4 other teachers are going plus 3 youth assistants.  I will stay at church school with other teachers/youth assistants for those children who do not wish to participate and for our regular childcare.

The Sophia Snow Place is a wonderful retirement community, conveniently nearby.  The residents are so looking forward to our children visiting and brightening up their Sunday morning.

Please sign up your child by sending in this attached permission slip. It can also be found in paper form at the Church School desk.

*Blessings* to you all as we enter into this special Advent season and prepare for the birth of our Lord!

 Faithfully,

 Sarah

Confirmation Class

The Confirmation Class had a great month in November as we began looking at the Church’s authority based on scripture, tradition, and reason.  So far we have covered scripture and tradition and will conclude our study of the “Anglican Stool” by looking at reason in December.  We originally had an academic class scheduled for the 14th, but because our class will conflict with the Christmas Caroling and supper, I am rescheduling the academic part of the class.  Instead, we will join the rest of the parish caroling through the neighborhood. We will sing, enjoy some nice hot chocolate, and conclude with a parish dinner.  It should be a lot of fun.  Speaking of fun, the Confirmation Class had a movie night on November 14th which was a great chance for the students to spend some time together.  Thanks to everyone who participated.

Confirmation Class Dates Currently Scheduled for December

12/7                     5:15   Church Authority (Leg three) – Reason - Is Christianity

        reasonable?

12/14                   4:30   Christmas Caroling and Supper (All are invited)

Prayer at the Redeemer

The Church School is interested in putting together a book of prayer.  We are looking for favorite prayers.  Do you say a certain prayer every night, or dinner table grace, or did you say one as a child?  We are interested in collecting all of these prayers and making them available to parishioners.  This will be a good way to share some time honored prayers, but it also could be filled with prayers that have some local or family color.  Praying prayers that another member of the congregation wrote, or prays regularly, will also make us remember to pray for each other, and these prayers will comfort us in knowing that we are not alone in our faith.  There is a great cloud of witnesses that join us in our prayers. If you are interested in participating, please e-mail me at meames@redeemerchestnuthill.org.

Youth and Family Fellowship Event in December

Christmas Caroling and Dinner!!

On December 14th Youth and Family Fellowship will team up with the Fellowship Committee, and the Confirmation Class, to storm the neighborhood with good cheer.  We will meet at 4:30 to warm our voices and then we will set off to do some old fashioned caroling.  We will have some nice warm cocoa available, and we will conclude the night by enjoying a hot meal together in the parish hall.  It is going to be so much fun.  How often have you watched an old movie featuring caroling and said to yourself, “I wish we still Christmas Caroled!”  Well, this is your opportunity to take part in a wonderful Christian tradition dating back to the middle ages.  If you are interested in participating, please e-mail me at meames@redeemerchestnuthill.org, or sign up on the sheet in the office hallway.  I will see you there.

Youth Bible Study

The Youth Bible Study is for students in the 6th grade and up which meets Sunday morning in the back classroom at 9:40am.  In November, the Bible study continued examining the book of 1 Samuel.  We studied the rise and fall of King Saul and the rise of King David.  In December, we will continue looking at King David as a faithful, but flawed, leader of Israel.  We will conclude the month by looking at King Solomon.  King Solomon is the last king of a united Israel in the first temple period.  This seems like a good place to pause in our study of the Old Testament, and take up the New in the winter and spring.  In January, we will begin our study of the Gospel of Mark.  As always, we will complete our Bible Study with a Bible oriented game like Bible Pictionary, Jeopardy, or charades.  The Bible Study is also continuing its work of writing prayers for the All Parish Eucharist.  Bible Study will meet this month on December 7th, 14th, and 21st.  Please have your youth join us for fun and learning.

Celebrate … Shop … Give … Help!

(1) Sign Up to Volunteer

Come one, Come All!!

Sign up for two hours of fellowship to make wreaths, help decorate, serve lunch, among other possibilities.  Use the sign up sheets posted in the hallway outside the church office.  Please sign up before December 1st.  Questions? Contact Christmas Market Volunteer chair Carol Post-Pfaelzer (apfaelzer@aol.com, 617-738-7983), or one of the Christmas Market co-chairs, Julia Woodard (jebillo@aol.com) or Lisa Farber (farmince@aol.com).

(2) Cook for the Bake Table

Bake and donate bread, pies, cakes, cookies, brownies, or other treats.  Please list all ingredients – it’s required by the health department.  Donate store-bought specialty items such as fancy spices, sauces, vinegars, mustards, condiments, party dips, etc.  Contact Christmas Market co-chairs, Julia Woodard (jebillo@aol.com) or Lisa Farber (farmince@aol.com) for Bake Table contributions or ideas.

(3) Supply greens for Wreaths

Please save your evergreen pruning through November and bring the clippings to the old parish hall Mon. 12/1 or Tues. 12/2. We especially appreciate boxwood, holly, leucothoe, juniper, and white pine!! Questons? Call Tish 617-566-5147 or Louisa 617-739-6884.

(4) Plan to buy your tree

Freshly cut balsam fir trees!  Most Christmas trees come from Canada, which means more travel time, more time to dry out on the back of a tractor trailer.  Our trees come straight from a small Vermont tree farm.  Buy it at the market, set it up in a bucket of water in your back yard until you’re ready to bring it in.  You’ll have the freshest tree on the block.

Auction News

The Live Auction has received some fantastic new items.  A fabulous Utah ski home that sleeps twelve to fourteen and is close to Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and the Cascades has been donated by the Notman Family.  A beautiful still life “Apples and Pears with Jug” has been donated by Heidi Nitze.   The Old Boston Garden and Fenway Park folk art prints have been moved to the Live Auction.  Test your trivia skills.  Can you spot Bill Bradley, Bruce Springsteen, Larry Bird’s birth date and the capacity of the Old Garden?

Can you find stolen base leaders, native sons, football teams that have played at Fenway?  These are but a few of the mysteries contained in these marvelous prints.  Stop by the Parish hall to preview the art and bid on the Silent Auction items.  New Silent Auction items include jewelry, a silent butler, and much more!

We are pleased to announce a very special guest auctioneer on Friday, December 5.  Church Lewis has kindly agreed to help Jim Napier lead the festivities!

 Celebrate … Shop … Give … Help!

Looking for strong volunteers to help unload Christmas trees on Thursday, December 4 at 8 a.m.  Able bodies are also needed to sell trees on Friday, December 5.  Please contact Chuck Farber at (617) 574-5933 or charles.farber@lmginv.com if you can help.

If you are able to help price and arrange baked good items on Thursday, December 4 or early Friday, December 5, please contact Lisa Farber or Julia Woodard
