Executive Assistant to the Rector
Dear Friends in Christ; It is my joy to introduce Laine Walters Young who has accepted my invitation to join our staff as Executive Assistant to the Rector. Her first day will be Monday, November 3rd. Laine is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, and holds a Master's degree in Theological Studies from Harvard. . Most recently she served as a literacy coach and program manager for the Boston Public Schools. In this role, she developed and managed the ReadBoston network, implementing improved program evaluation through site visits, observation and performance tracking measures. She also developed library resources, including purchasing and organization, and researched literacy efforts in after school programs in order to implement best practices. She comes with excellent secretarial skills, and a lot of energy and drive. Laine is a member of Saint James Church in Cambridge, where she teaches Sunday School and where her husband is Senior Warden. Her references describe her as dedicated, consistent, competent and highly organized, with a lively sense of humor and a strong work ethic. In my own conversations with Laine, I have been impressed with her ready grasp of the nuances involved of the position we are trying to fill. As our Senior Warden, Suzy Westcott, prepares to step down, we must prepare to transfer to staff many operational functions that she currently fulfills on a volunteer basis, of which the lion's share will fall to the Executive Assistant. At the same time, this position is, inescapably, front line, involving a plethora of daily secretarial tasks, greeting all who come to the door, handling the phones, and the like. Laine not only clearly understands the scope of these responsibilities, but is excited by the variety the job promises. We have been looking for a long time, and I am very glad we have waited until we found Laine. I know you will join me in helping her to feel at home here at the Redeemer. Blessings, Dorsey+ |

Stewardship 2009 Treasure for the Heart, the Soul, and the Mind
The Stewardship 2009 materials and pledge cards were mailed out on October 14th. We will not be circulating the Neighborhood Pledge Bag this year. Instead, our faithful captains will be contacting parishioners in person, by telephone, or by email to keep you informed about Stewardship 2009, to answer any questions you may have, and to remind you to send in your pledge cards by November 2nd, 2008, the end of the Annual Stewardship Pledge Drive. This year, we urge you to increase your pledge. Pressures of inflation, rising gas costs, and increased prices have a significant impact on the annual operating budget of the Church. The same dollar that you pledged to the Church in 1998 is now worth about 60 cents. Even the dollar you pledged last year is only worth 93 cents today. The programs at the Church of the Redeemer have continued to grow in order to fulfill our mission. An increased pledge of 10 percent keeps our program just barely ahead of inflation; a pledge of 20 percent allows us to move forward while preserving our endowment for capital expenses. With that in mind, we ask you to be as generous as you can when you consider Stewardship 2009. In past years, a core group of about 30 parishioners and parish families have contributed over half of our Annual Stewardship funds. We hope to achieve full participation in Stewardship 2009 from all members of our parish. Please help us make our rich parish life even stronger this year by giving to our treasure for heart, mind, and soul. Yours in Christ, Elliot Bostwick Davis Rick Weed IMPORTANT DATES Sunday, October 19th through Sunday, November 2nd: Annual Stewardship Pledge Drive Sunday, November 2nd: Annual Stewardship Pledge Drive ends. All pledges should be received by the Church Financial Office. December 31, 2009: Payments for Stewardship 2009 completed. ******************************************************************* To all of our faithful Captains, we are grateful for all the good work you are doing. Here are a few reminders for the last week of the Stewardship 2009 Pledge Drive: 1) Please be sure that you have spoken with all of the parishioners on your list about Stewardship 2009. 2) Please call the Parish Office to find out whether those on your list have sent in their completed pledge forms. For anyone who has not done so, please call them to remind them that the Stewardship 2009 Pledge Drive ends on November 2nd, when we hope to receive all pledges to allow the Treasurer and Vestry to devise an accurate budget for the coming year. 3) Please encourage all to participate in Stewardship 2009. We realize that the economic climate is extremely difficult, but we hope to urge all members of our congregation to be a part of this effort. Questions? Contact either Elliot Davis (617.731.2125, home or 617.369.3406, office) or Rick Weed (home and office). Thank you for helping to make our community even stronger. |

Fall House Meetings: Does Prayer Work? Almost everyone has prayed at least once in his or her lifetime. What happened the last time you did? Did it "work"? Or not? How do you know?
At each of three house meetings, we
will get to the bottom of these provocative questions, and a few
others like them (including how to talk to your child when the
goldfish dies anyway). As always, there will be wonderful food and
drink, warm fellowship, and a chance to get to know fellow
parishioners in an informal setting filled with great conversation.
Monday, November 3rd Anne and John Grandin Monday, November 10th Megan and Chris Sampson NO INVITATIONS ARE BEING SENT OUT THIS FALL SO Please let us know which you can attend by signing up at the table outside Dorsey’s office OR CALLING THE OFFICE. |

Youth Bible Study The Youth Bible Study is for students in the 6th grade and up which meets Sunday morning in the back classroom at 9:40am. In October, the Bible study began delving into the book of 1 Samuel. We studied the call of the prophet Samuel as a little boy, the stealing of the Ark by the Philistines, and are now reading about the rise and fall of King Saul. As always, we will complete our Bible Study with a Bible oriented game like Bible Pictionary, Jeopardy, or charades. The Bible Study is also continuing its work of writing prayers for the All Parish Eucharist. Bible Study will meet this month on November 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 24th. Please have your youth join us for fun and learning. |

Confirmation Class The Confirmation Class had a great month in October as we began our academic classes. We looked at the creation stories in Genesis and had a great discussion about theistic evolution and the creationism/evolution debate. In our second class of the month, we discussed sin and the Adam and Eve story. We also began a discussion of the authority of scripture. In November, we will continue our discussion of church authority, under the Anglican ethos, by investigating tradition and reason. I am very pleased to announce that Josh and Starr Peteet have joined the class as teaching assistants. The Confirmation Class is so large this year we have need to split the class for certain discussions. Josh and Starr are two committed young Christians, with inquiring minds, who are invaluable additions to the teaching of the class, and I thank them for their help. Confirmation Class Dates Currently Scheduled for November11/2 5:15 Church Authority (Leg two) – Tradition and Church History - What is the Church anyway? 11/9 5:15 Church Authority (Leg three) – Reason - Is Christianity reasonable? |

Youth and Family Fellowship Events 2008-09 We are going to have a great time this year as the Church of the Redeemer gathers momentum in Family Ministry. Last year we got off to a good start with our youth and family fellowship events, and we are looking to expand on our experiences. One lesson I learned from last year is to be very flexible with scheduling. You will see that with just a few exceptions, I have not yet scheduled dates or times for events. What I would like to do, is have parents and youth check out the Redeemer Family Blog at www.redeemerchestnuthill.blogspot.com. Through this blog we can have conversations that can include the scheduling of events. Hopefully, through this better communication, we can have even better support for our fellowship events. The blog is also a way to suggest other activities. I have found in my short time as a priest that many of the best ideas for family ministry are not mine, so please feel free to make suggestions through the blog, or through me personally.

2nd Annual Redeemer Football Game November is the time of year when we put baseball and soccer behind us and pick up the pigskin for a cold weather game. Last year we had a fun football game, but the curate’s team didn’t win. I am looking for change this year! At Cassidy Park in Cleveland Circle on Sunday, November 23rd, when the oldest of our youth are planning for the big thanksgiving football games, the younger than high school age youth, can challenge me on the gridiron. The game will begin at 1:00. This will give us enough time to help with the Thanksgiving in-gathering and change out of our church clothes. In all seriousness, this is not a game played at Division 1A speed, and everyone is welcome to play: especially girls. Lace up those sneakers or cleats; we are going to have a football game! If you are interested in playing, please e-mail me at meames@redeemerchestnuthill.org or post it on the blog at www.redeemerchestnuthill.blogspot.com. I will want to make sure we have enough water and orange slices to keep everyone hydrated and full of energy. |

Once again, the Fellowship Committee is pleased to announce Foyers 2008 - 2009 !
We put together participants into groups of 8-10 people. Groups meet 4-5 times throughout the year for a pot-luck supper, rotating between different homes. Each group will have a Captain to keep things organized.
The only rule is to have fun. The goal is for the evenings to be low key, and low effort, a chance to stay in touch with long-time friends and make new friends alike. Foyers is for everyone; long-time participants and those new to the church, as it allows us to strengthen the bonds that make being a member of the Church of the Redeemer so special.
Ask any of the many who continue to participate year after year. Being a part of Foyers is great!

UGANDA MISSION: SUMMER OF 2009 Information Session Sunday, November 9th, at 12:00 noon We are planning a family mission trip to Uganda from June 24th to July 8th, 2009, in partnership with Pilgrim-Uganda, an indigenous Christian agency working for the evangelism and redevelopment of the Teso (northeastern) region. The centerpiece of our work will be seven days spent at Beacon of Hope, a boarding school in Soroti, conducting enrichment programs for high-school age students. The trip is limited to twenty participants, and we are especially looking for missioners who have a desire to share a particular skill or passion by offering workshops to these youth during that week. In the past, teams have taught first aid, art, music, soccer, gymnastics, drama, and dance. We also can use adults with skills in medicine, particularly public health, engineering, biology, chemistry, and agriculture. However, please do not assume that, if you do not have any of these skills in particular, you should not go on the trip. In fact, you may be just the person we need to help everyone else do their jobs! And you may have a unique contribution to make we haven’t thought of, yet. So come on the 9th of November and find out more! |

THANKSGIVING INGATHERING
Sunday, November 23rd during the 10:30 am Service
This year, the Redeemer will again gather food for the Thanksgiving meal for the homeless and the working poor. This year our Thanksgiving meal collection will go to the Cor Unum Meal Center in Lawrence, MA. Lawrence is one of the poorest cities in the United States and is the poorest city in Massachusetts. Thirty-three percent of the people of Lawrence live below the poverty line. Of children under the age of eighteen, 49.9 percent live in households below the poverty line. The Cor Unum Meal Center is a non-profit meal center located in South Lawrence. Cor Unum provides free, nutritious meals in a safe environment to families, the working poor, and the homeless. Cor Unum feeds hundreds of people at every meal daily since it commenced operation in September 2006.
For their Thanksgiving Meal it would be wonderful if our Church School families would contribute several of the items listed below:
· Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers: Whole Butternut squash (20) · Kindergarten and 1st Grade: Stove Top Stuffing (need 50 boxes) · 2nd and 3rd Grade: Canned cranberry sauce and jars of gravy (need 30 of each) · 4th and 5th Grade: Mitts and gloves for children (need 30 of each)* · 6th and 7th Grade: 5 lb bags of white potatoes (need 10 bags) · Confirmation Class: New, men’s large, white socks (need 30 pairs) * Stretchy mitts and gloves can be purchased at the Rugged Bear for $2-$4/pair
Contributions can be dropped off from Sunday, November 16th through Sunday November 23rd in the collection baskets in the front of the church office or at the church school desk. Please contact Laura Patton (617-232-5175 or laurated@rcn.com) with any questions. |
