 Weld House Garden Rejuvenation Project

The Grounds Committee is very excited about a new plan for plantings at the back entrance of Weld House.  As you may have noticed, a portion of the bed in front of the entrance was claimed last summer in order to expand the parking lot.  In addition, the old plantings had become quite overgrown and ugly, and several of the yews could even be considered safety hazards (providing someone a place to hide).

The new plan, which entails the planting of several pink flowering dogwood trees, a number of rhododendrons and hollies, and a border of boxwoods, should truly enhance the back entrance of our church building.  It will be on exhibit in the parish hall in February (and possibly late January), at which time we are also hoping that parishioners will consider helping with the project by giving plants in memory of or in  honor of their loved ones.  While the Grounds Committee has some money in its budget for this project, there is not enough to fund it completely.  Your gifts will help to make the garden a reality and will be a lasting tribute to those whom you cherish.  Gifts can be made in varying amounts and will be greatly appreciated.

Family Mission Trip to New Orleans

I am delighted to report that the family mission trip to New Orleans is full!  (We will be starting a waiting list).  The Redeemer really has a heart for mission, and I am excited by the energy around the trip.  We will have a few preparation meetings designed to get to know our St. Stephen’s partners and learn more about New Orleans post-Katrina.  Missioners are also encouraged to help with the mission support events in the coming months.  Thank you all for your dedication and willingness to support mission work at the Redeemer.

Gulf Coast Bash at the Undercroft Jazz Hall

On Friday, May 2nd there will be the party of the year at the Undercroft Jazz Hall.  The day promises great music, southern style food and cocktails, a silent auction, and lots of fun.  There are even rumors of an appearance by the Redeemer Blues Brothers.  This event will support the Redeemer/St. Stephen’s mission trip to Resurrection House in New Orleans.  Our missionaries will be helping a needy family rebuild their home in New Orleans.  The money raised at this event will help fund scholarships for the mission trip.

Jazz Hall Silent Auction

The New Orleans’ Mission Committee is looking for donations for a silent auction to take place at the Gulf Coast Bash at the Undercroft Jazz Hall on May 2nd.  There are no items that are too big or too small.  Donations in the past have ranged from vacation packages and dinners to Hawaiian Shirts.  If you would like to support the mission trip in this way, please contact Marc Eames: 617-566-7679.

Uganda Pen-Pals

We are seeking 50 Redeemer families to adopt pen-pals from Uganda!  We have letters in hand written by the amazing teenagers at the PILGRIM-sponsored school in Soroti.  (Also see the students' artwork, which is full of newfound hope, on display in the Parish Hall this Sunday).  This is an easy and meaningful family activity: read your letter together and write a response, then send the letter to the student at PILGRIM's U.S. address (provided).  PILGRIM will then forward all the letters to Uganda to make sure they reach their recipients in a timely fashion.  Please see the display this week at coffee hour for more information and to receive your pen-pal, or contact Leslie Williams, leswill@gmail.com, 617-969-0470, for more information.

Here's an excerpt from one of the letters: "Hi my friend in USA, greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Back to me I'm fine. ... I would like to know which subjects you like and sports games, whether football or volleyball and the team you support... but for my side I like all subjects and the team I support is Arsenal....

I wish you good studies.... from yours, Opio Edward."

Celebrate this Easter with a Gift of Lilies

Did you know that the beautiful Easter lilies which adorn the Church of the Redeemer at Easter are made possible by many financial donations from our Parishioners?

Our Easter flower donations traditionally have been made as a lovely way to remember those who are special to us, but gifts may be made “in celebration of” an event or important milestone as well as “in honor of,” “in memory of,” or “in thanksgiving for” loved ones.

The memorial notations for the Easter donations are recorded in calligraphy in The Book of Remembrance, on display in the Narthex throughout the year – a lovely reminder for all.

Names which are received by March 18th will be printed in the Easter worship service leaflets.

We suggest $50 for the first listing, $10 for each additional one, but, of course will welcome ANY AMOUNT.

We hope that you will contribute to the glorious celebration of Easter at the Redeemer with a memorial gift.  The results of your generosity will be enjoyed by all who visit us at Easter time.

Thank you.

Please provide the following information and return it either to the Church office or by mail to Mrs. Nina Moriarty, Treasurer of the Altar Guild, 214 Heath Street, Chestnut Hill, MA  02467.

Vestry Clerk

At its meeting on March 4th, the Vestry learned with great sadness that Betsey Shay and her family will be moving to Columbia, Missouri in June.  Betsey has done a great job as the Clerk of the Vestry and will be greatly missed.  The Redeemer’s by-laws provide for the Vestry to appoint a new Clerk to serve until the next Annual Meeting, and the Vestry plans to do so as it is important for the parish to have a Clerk of the Vestry.  It was decided to reconvene this year’s Nominating Committee to help identify a candidate.  The members of the Nominating Committee are Peter Coffin, Gene Dahmen, Charlie Kline, Peggy Reiser, Megan Sampson, and Suzy Westcott.  If you have any suggestions of people to be considered, please give their name to a member of the committee as soon as possible.

Volunteer at the St. Stephen’s After-School Program Easter Party

Thursday March 20th from 1:30pm – 5:00pm

Please consider volunteering in one of two ways:

Volunteer from home by boiling 2 dozen white eggs.  The children will be decorating these eggs.  We will need over 250 eggs this year!  Please boil the white eggs and drop them off at the Redeemer (in their cartons) by Wednesday March 19th.  Please leave them in the fridge.  Please call or email Laura Patton (laurated@rcn.com or 617-232-5175) to let her know if you are boiling eggs.

Volunteer at the party on Thursday March 20th from 1:30pm – 5:00pm.  We will need about 6-8 volunteers from 1:30pm until 5:00pm to help prepare for and participate in this fun (really fun!) party.  If you can only help out for part of the time we would still love your help.  Volunteers will work as a team to set up the parish hall at St. Stephen’s for the party and hide eggs for the egg hunt.  We will also be serving a meal for the children. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Robynne Brown (RobynneBrown@comcast.net or 617-244-2725).

 All Parish Fellowship Tea

Featuring comments and reflections by Nina Moriarity

on Raphael’s The Disputà

 Sunday, April 27th

 4:00pm – 5:00pm

Please join us in the parish hall as we enjoy tea and this opportunity to reflect on Raphael’s The Disputà with Nina Moriarity who is a member of our parish and Professor of Art History at Babson College.  She will discuss this painting in connection to the celebration of the Eucharist.  Evensong will be held immediately following the tea at 5:00pm.

 Background on the painting:

The Disputà, also called The Disputation over the Sacrament, is a depiction of theology as one of the four branches of learning represented on the walls of the Stanza della Segnatura, the private papal library, in the Vatican palace.   The fresco was painted c. 1509-1511 by Raphael (Raffaello Santi), one of the stars of Italian Renaissance painting
