Family Mission Trip to New Orleans

 From the Curate:  

The Church of the Redeemer will be heading to the Big Easy to partake in vital mission work in the devastated Gulf Coast region.  I have been down to the Gulf Coast for a total of a month over three occasions since Katrina, and there is still an overwhelming amount of ministry to do in the area.  The trip will begin on June 24^th and we will be returning on July 2^nd.  This will be a family mission trip; children, teens, and adults are invited to come along.  Young children can attend with their parents, and youth from the eighth grade up are encouraged to attend if their parents are able to come or not.  Adults without children are also encouraged to come along.  Those who are handy are especially needed, but this is not a requirement for participation.  On the trip, we will be working with Resurrection House helping the people of the devastated 9^th Ward in New Orleans rebuild their communities.  Jobs range in difficulty from heavy construction to passing out food, and bringing water to neighbors and workers.  Feel free to contact me if you would like more information about the trip.  The estimated cost of the trip will be $730 per person (includes food, housing, and all transportation); a deposit of $100 for this trip will be needed by March 16^th.  We have also invited St. Stephen’s to participate with us as mission partners.  If you have interest in serving on a mission committee to help plan fundraisers and further mission trips, please let me know. 

Uganda Pen-Pals

We are seeking 50 Redeemer families to adopt pen-pals from Uganda!  We have letters in hand written by the amazing teenagers at the PILGRIM-sponsored school in Soroti.  (Also see the students' artwork, which is full of newfound hope, on display in the Parish Hall this Sunday).  This is an easy and meaningful family activity: read your letter together and write a response, then send the letter to the student at PILGRIM's U.S. address (provided).  PILGRIM will then forward all the letters to Uganda to make sure they reach their recipients in a timely fashion.  Please see the display this week at coffee hour for more information and to receive your pen-pal, or contact Leslie Williams, leswill@gmail.com, 617-969-0470, for more information.

Here's an excerpt from one of the letters: "Hi my friend in USA, greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Back to me I'm fine. ... I would like to know which subjects you like and sports games, whether football or volleyball and the team you support... but for my side I like all subjects and the team I support is Arsenal....

I wish you good studies.... from yours, Opio Edward."

Celebrate this Easter with a Gift of Lilies

Did you know that the beautiful Easter lilies which adorn the Church of the Redeemer at Easter are made possible by many financial donations from our Parishioners? 

Our Easter flower donations traditionally have been made as a lovely way to remember those who are special to us, but gifts may be made “in celebration of” an event or important milestone as well as “in honor of,” “in memory of,” or “in thanksgiving for” loved ones. 

The memorial notations for the Easter donations are recorded in calligraphy in The Book of Remembrance, on display in the Narthex throughout the year – a lovely reminder for all. 

Names which are received by March 18^th will be printed in the Easter worship service leaflets. 

We suggest $50 for the first listing, $10 for each additional one, but, of course will welcome ANY AMOUNT. 

We hope that you will contribute to the glorious celebration of Easter at the Redeemer with a memorial gift.  The results of your generosity will be enjoyed by all who visit us at Easter time.

We had our first House Meeting in February, which centered on building Family Ministry.  We had excellent attendance of over twenty people.  The meeting was a great fellowship opportunity as well as chance to spend some time on a few discussion questions.  We encourage everyone to participate in the March meetings.  The experiences that we share at these meetings will help us build a ministry in which we all can contribute and support.  At the end of this round of House Meetings we will gather together as a parish community and discuss the results.  From these follow-up meetings, our new family ministry will arise.  The meetings will be fun and thought provoking.  Please join us, and let the office know if you are able to attend.

Lenten Series 2008

 What is sin?  How can it be Good News?  In these days of constant C-SPAN and MTV, how do I know what is right or wrong, and how right or wrong is it?  What difference does a “small decision” make in my life, my work, the lives of my family and co-workers?  

 Welcome to “The Seven Deadly Sins: a Consumer’s Guide”. The series will explore the spiritual, emotional, psychological and physiological ramifications of the seven great sins, and their corresponding virtues.  Led by the Rector, the series will incorporate guest appearances by more than one expert in the field of sin, and will also use excerpts from film, literature, and music to explore the shadow and light of our common soul.  Five Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm in the Parish Hall from February 13^th through March 12^th, 2008.

Volunteer at the St. Stephen’s After-School Program Easter Party

Thursday March 20^th from 1:30pm – 5:00pm

Please consider volunteering in one of two ways:

Volunteer from home by boiling 2 dozen white eggs.  The children will be decorating these eggs.  We will need over 250 eggs this year!  Please boil the white eggs and drop them off at the Redeemer (in their cartons) by Wednesday March 19th.  Please leave them in the fridge.  Please call or email Laura Patton (laurated@rcn.com or 617-232-5175) to let her know if you are boiling eggs.

Volunteer at the party on Thursday March 20^th from 1:30pm – 5:00pm.  We will need about 6-8 volunteers from 1:30pm until 5:00pm to help prepare for and participate in this fun (really fun!) party.  If you can only help out for part of the time we would still love your help.  Volunteers will work as a team to set up the parish hall at St. Stephen’s for the party and hide eggs for the egg hunt.  We will also be serving a meal for the children.
