SUMMER LEMONADE

We are looking for volunteers who can help with summer coffee hours of lemonade and cookies after the 9:00 am Sunday services.  Lovey is there to help organize, so the task is simple. If you will be here, please sign up on the sheet outside the Rector’s office or contact Jane Metcalf.  Your help is much appreciated and gives a welcoming touch to these summer coffee hours.

We wish all of you a wonderful summer and look forward to picking up again in the fall.

Christmas Market 2007

Volunteers Needed

We need volunteers to help out with all aspects of this year’s Market and Auction.  We have different roles that can fit different schedules -- from an hour free here and there to a more substantial involvement.  If you’re interested in helping out, please  contact the co-chairs, Amy Weed (aweed01@yahoo.com, 617- 879-0123) or Julia Woodard (jebillo@aol.com, 617-522-5021).  Committees include:  Food , Greens, Consignors,  Auction, Baked Goods, Crafts.  Visit our new web site:  www.redeemerchestnuthill.org/cmarket for photos, details, and more!

 Auction Items Needed

It’s never too early to donate to the Christmas Market Auction!  If you have an auction item to donate, please  fill out the form in Redeemer News and return it to the church office, or contact Mary Crown (mecrown@lotsoc.com) for live auction items, Pam Awtrey (bawtrey@comcast.net) for silent auction items or  Amy Weed.

Looking for Vendors!

We’re always looking for new and interesting vendors for the Christmas Market.  As you travel around this summer, please remember the market and pick up a card, phone number or website and pass it on to the vendors committee: Julia Woodard, Wendy Murphy (617 731 1531, wemurphy@verizon.net), Vicky Whitney (617 734 0486, brokervick@aol.com), or Zibby Pyle (617 734 3360, zibpyle@yahoo.com).

SUGGESTED SUMMER READING

Dear Friends in Christ,

As you embark on your vacations, Dorsey and I highly recommend that you read Garry Will's What Jesus Meant (Penguin, 2006, 144 pages). This is a short, very readable volume written by a Pulitzer-prize winning, Roman Catholic, classical Greek scholar and historian. His translations of the Greek text are refreshing and thought-provoking. His subject is the "Jesus of faith", stripped from many of the the accretions and traditions of the Church. Wills is writing for the lay Christian. We will be using this volume as the basis for our fall conversations in the adult education classes which will begin in mid September.

May the God bless you this summer with light, laughter and fun. We look forward to seeing you in September.

Peace and love,
Ella Auchincloss
Master of Theological Studies, Harvard Divinity School
Head of the Adult Education Committee

Baptismal Font Rear Wall Commission for Artwork

The Church of the Redeemer, an Episcopal parish in Chestnut Hill, MA, seeks proposals for a work of art to decorate the rear wall of the church above the existing baptismal font and below the existing stained glass window depicting the Transfiguration. The Gothic-style stone church was designed by Henry Vaughan and built in 1915.  The marble baptismal font was designed by Ralph Adams Cram.  The church’s decoration also includes a fine series of stained glass windows by Wilbur Herbert Burnham and Charles Eamer Kempe.  There is a carved wooden reredos on the front wall of the church.

The back wall is 29.5 feet wide and the space available for the artwork is approximately 14 to 20 feet wide and 8 to 9 feet high. Non-acoustically sensitive materials (stone, glass, wood, metal, ceramic, enamel, paint) are desirable.  It is hoped that the depiction of all ages, including children, might be included in the final work.

Artists nationwide are encouraged to apply.  For additional information about the site and budget, which is inclusive of all artist’s fees, materials, fabrication, shipping, insurance, and installation, please contact Suzy Westcott, the Senior Warden.  Email: suzywestcott@hotmail.com,  Telephone: 617-566-7679, ext. 12, Fax: 617-566-6678

 Deadline: September 10, 2007

Pictures of the church and site are available on the parish's website www.redeemerchestnuthill.org
