A Message
from Chris Eastburn
Dear
friends,
Below is
information about 3 exciting upcoming
performances.
-
On Sunday
May 6th "Consent to Gravity" will be
performed on a concert called "Voices of
the Spirit- Voices of New England" at
Grace Episcopal Church in Newton,
MA under the direction of Vivian
Montgomery & Linda Clark. Even if
you've already heard "Consent on
Gravity" live in L.A., N.Y.C, Boston,
Providence or on CD this promises to be
a very unique and exciting performance
as it will also include the lush and
lovely voices of a choir in addition to
soloists and string quartet. (See below
for a complete listing of the many
excellent works and living composers
featured on the concert)
-
for
those of you in Maine- Also on
Sunday May 6th, "Castles in the
Air" will be performed by the Southern
Maine Children's Chorus directed by Lise
Dunn. "Castles in the Air", written by
Eliza Moore and myself, was originally
commissioned and performed by the PALS
Children's Chorus as an energetic finale
to their performance at the American
Choral Directors Association conference
in Boston. The Southern Maine
Children's Chorus is doing a terrific
job with it. (I heard them in rehearsal
last week.) Also on the program is
music by Mozart, Hungarian Folk Songs, a
"My Favorite Things" etc... (see below
for complete info)
-
On Saturday
May 12th a bluegrass inspired musical
setting I did of the "For the Beauty of
the Earth" text is being performed by
the Treble Chorus of New England at
Merrimack College in North Andover, MA
directed by Darren Dailey. This will
be the premiere of a new arrangement of
the piece which I originally composed in
2002. (I was pleased to realize in the
rearranging that it's possible to infuse
the energy of a bluegrass band into the
10 fingers of a pianist!) The song has
a very joyous, celebratory spirit. Also
on the program are works by Alice
Parker, Nick Page and many American
standards. (see below for complete
info)
“Voices of the Spirit - Voices of New
England,” a Collaborative Concert
Presented by Grace Episcopal Church
Newton and First Parish Unitarian
Needham, on Sunday, May 6, 4:00 p.m.,
Grace Episcopal Church, Newton
Contact: Vivian Montgomery (Music
Director, First Parish Needham),
617-969-5806/
vmontgomery@verizon.net; Linda Clark
(Music Director, Grace Episcopal
Church), 508-668-5055/
Clarkpease2@cs.com
On Sunday, May 6, the music program of
First Parish Unitarian Universalist
Needham will be collaborating with the
music program of Grace Episcopal Church
in Newton on a program entitled "Voices
of the Spirit - Voices of New England:
Recent Works by Regional
Composers." The concert will take place
at Grace Episcopal Church at 76 Eldredge
Street in Newton Corner at 4:00 p.m.
Suggested donation is $10/ $5 for
students, youth, & senior citizens. To
contact the church, please call
617-244-3221 or go the website at
Gracenewton.org.
The program involves performances by the
adult AND children's choirs from both
congregations as well as soloists Eva
Kendrick (soprano), Diane Droste
(mezzo), Daniel Molkentin (tenor), and
Bradford Gleim (baritone). The
performers also include a string quartet
of the most prized graduate students
from the Longy School of Music. The
repertoire includes Christopher
Eastburn's "Consent to Gravity"
(settings of texts by painter Frederick
Sommer), Christopher Montgomery's
setting of Robert Blake's "The Mental
Traveller," and the world premiere of
Eva Kendrick's treatment of Naomi Shihab
Nye's poem "Famous," commissioned for
the occasion. Other compositions will be
by Daniel Pinkham, Frank Pesci, Elena
Ruehr and John Howell Morrison. Such
cooperation as has developed between
music directors Vivian Montgomery (First
Parish) and Linda Clark (Grace Episcopal
Church) is a great demonstration of the
nourishing exchange of artistic
resources that can take place among
religious institutions in the Boston
area. And the music is full of fresh and
amazing sounds, along with moving,
challenging texts.
Sunday, May 6, 3:00 P.M Immanuel Baptist
Church, Portland.
SOUTHERN MAINE CHILDREN’S CHORUS

the Southern Maine Children's Chorus as
they usher in the season. The 100 voice

Immanuel Baptist Church in Portland,
Maine. The chorus, which includes a
training choir and concert choir, will
perform a varied repertoire including
Laudate Dominum by Mozart, Matyas

jazz arrangement of My Favorite Things
and Castles In the Air by Chris Eastburn
and Eliza Moore. Donations accepted at
