Sunday, March 18th Forum

By now many of you have had the chance to meet Paul Cho, his wife, Sarah and their children.  Paul and his family have been members of this congregation for many months and have already become very active participants in the life of our community.  You may also know that Paul is an ordained minister in the Korean Evangelical Holiness Church.  He is hoping to start a ministry to Korean and Korean-American university students in the area, and he hopes it can be based here.  The Rector, Wardens and Vestry are actively exploring the possibility of renting space to Paul and his congregation to establish this mission. We would like to invite you to find out more about Paul's church, its spiritual ties to Anglicanism through the witness of John and Charles Wesley, what he understands God to be calling him to and how that might be consistent with God's mission for us at the Redeemer.  Please come to a Forum at noon on Sunday the 18th of March to spend some time in conversation with Paul and to learn more about this possibility.

2007 LENTEN SERIES

Lent as Love’s True Way

Dear Friends in Christ;

It seems as though Christmas is barely over, but in fact Lent will soon be upon us.  Some see this as not very good news, a season that begins with ashes, drags on through the gloom of late winter, and doesn’t end until Easter Sunday.  As important as self-denial, repentance and discipline are, they are a rather limited menu for forty days, so I propose something that will get at what Lent really ought to be about

Over four Wednesday evenings, beginning February 28th, we will explore the life of faith as a journey in love.  True Love: the Good Life will be an exploration of authentic love through Scripture, film, literature, painting, music, poetry, and history.  What does it mean to love?  How does God’s love for us make it possible for us to love others?  What are the qualities of love shown through the media of our culture, and how are we influenced by them?  What are the substitutes for love we most commonly settle for, and how do they effect us?  Finally, what is the relationship between love and justice:  how does the love we enjoy move us and empower us toward the repair of the world?

Betsy McConnell, LICSW, will join me in leading these evenings.  As a psychotherapist, Betsy will focus on the nature of love as a category in human development:  the benefits of love to the whole human being, and the consequences of its denial; how love is often hindered by our experience in life, and how such barriers can be removed.   Interwoven with this will be an ongoing exposition of the mystery of God’s love shown us in Christ, how this love nurtures, shapes, transforms, and enlightens us from our earliest days until the end of life; how grace through prayer and Word and Sacrament can actually create in us the faith we need to love more truly.

This is not an academic course.  Everything we hear, watch, read, and talk about will be approached as instruments for deepening our own lives as beloved of God and lovers of one another.  By the end of the course, our expectation is that we will all be changed more into the likeness of Christ.

The evenings will begin with a light supper at 6:15 in the parish hall, and the class will begin at 7:00, ending at 8:30.  Please sign up, so we can plan the evenings in advance in the most comfortable and convenient way.

And may Christ richly bless you during the remainder of this Epiphanytide, and the coming holy season.

Faithfully in Christ,

Dorsey

A Silent Women’s Retreat

Silent Prayer, Reflection, Restoration and Sharing

Saturday, April 14, 2007

Bethany House of Prayer

181 Appleton St

Arlington, MA

9:00AM to 4:00PM

Most of us are painfully aware of the external demands, social obligations, family duties and ceaseless chain of events in our lives, which create a cacophony of distractions and push out the real reason for our commitments.  In the context of doing the next thing on our list, our prayers become more like a shopping list and less like a conversation between two friends.  God calls most of us to be in this world and to be in communion with him.  This retreat will provide a sacred space where you can rebalance the temporal and the eternal.  We invite you to bring yourself to the chapel and grounds of Bethany for a deeply personal encounter with God, His Beauty, His Love and the mysterious workings of His Spirit in your life.

DONATIONS FOR EASTER LILIES

It has been an Easter-time tradition at the Redeemer to give donations towards the Altar Lilies as a way of remembering those who are special to us. The Altar Guild invites all parishioners to contribute to the Church’s Easter lilies either “in memory of” or “in thanksgiving for” their loved ones. Names will be recorded in calligraphy in the church’s Book of Remembrance, which is on display during the year in the bookcase in the Narthex. Checks payable to the Church of the Redeemer Altar Guild may be sent in any amount to Mrs. Nina Moriarty, 214 Heath Street, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467.
