All Committee Meeting Rescheduled

7:30 pm

January 9th

A blue-sky roundtable in which, building on a previous conversation, we will finalize program offerings between now and June in fellowship, family ministry, adult formation and other areas.  Committee chairs are especially encouraged to come, and the meeting is open to anyone in the parish who wants to claim their voice in helping to shape the future direction of the Redeemer.

 Christmas Offering Recipient

 Al Ahli Hospital, Gaza

Based on the recommendation of the Outreach Committee, the Vestry has chosen Al Ahli Hospital, Gaza as the recipient of our 2006 Christmas Offering.   The Al Ahli Arab Hospital was founded by the Christian Mission Society in 1882.  It is located in Gaza City in the Gaza Strip.  It operates as a service ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem.  The vast majority of this small hospital’s patients cannot afford to pay for the medical care received.  Its list of services include:  general hospital, general curative medication, outpatient clinic, pediatric, urology, and community preventative program.  The hospital has 80 beds for general surgery. The hospital serves the general population in Gaza City and also has a mobile outreach program to smaller villages in the Gaza.   The hospital is run by a Christian Palestinian woman named Suhaila Tarazai.

According to The World Health Organization, the United Nations and Doctors without Borders, the people in the Palestinian Territories are living in a state of crisis.  Sixty percent of the Palestinian population lives in refugee camps.  Serious food, water, fuel, and power shortages are having devastating consequences for Palestinian families in the Gaza strip.  More than half of the 1.4 million people living in the Gaza strip are living in extreme poverty and are now dependent on food aid, according to the World Food Program.  The continuing violence, the worsening of security conditions and the closure of borders has halted the economies of the Palestinian Territories.  According to UNICEF some 838,000 Palestinian children living in Gaza are bearing the brunt of these problems.

Not only does the Al Ahli Hospital provide free medical care to those who come to the hospital, it also organizes monthly medical outreach clinics to the poorest villages in the Gaza Strip, where inhabitants are unable to travel outside the village due to border closures and check points.  A team of volunteer doctors and nurses treat patients, giving them desperately needed medical treatment for the first time in months.  This is a wonderful hospital doing good work in a war-torn part of the world which presently sees no end to turmoil and conflict.

We will have more information on the Al Ahli Arab Hospital on the bulletin board across from the parish office if you are interested in learning more.

CHRISTMAS SERVICE ASSISTANTS NEEDED

We still need four ushers for the 10:30 pm Christmas Eve service which has a choral prelude beginning at 10:00 pm.  We also need three ushers for the 10:30 am service that day.

In addition, we need one more acolyte for the 10:00 pm prelude/ 10:30 pm Christmas Eve service.

We also need one more LEM for both the 4:00 pm and 10:30 pm services.

If you are able to help in any of these positions, please let the office know.

Annual Christmas Party for

St. Stephen's After School Program!

The Christmas Party for the children of the St. Stephen’s After School Program will be held this Thursday, December 21, from 2:45pm – 5pm at St. Stephen’s in the South End.  The children LOVE the Christmas party and there will be cookie decorating and craft activities – and we will be giving out the books from the Christmas Book Collection!  If you are interested in volunteering at this event (we are always looking for more volunteers!) please contact Laura Patton 617-232-5175.  If you would like to come with an older child who might also be interested in volunteering that would be wonderful.  If you only have time to volunteer for an hour that would also be a help.  St. Stephen’s is located at 419 Shawmut Avenue, Boston, 02118.  Please contact Laura if you have any questions or you would like more information about the party.

Thank you to everyone

who bought gifts for those in need

and

thank you to everyone at Aquitaine Bis

who contributed as well.

Your generosity was very much appreciated and succeeded in bringing much joy and happiness to these families and their children at Christmas.
