Adult Education Streams of Living Water: Classics in Devotional Prayer and Practice The Church of the Redeemer is offering a seven-week series devoted to the study of the great “streams” or dimensions of faith and practice that define the Christian tradition based upon the book, Streams of Living Water by Richard J. Foster. The Rev. Dorsey W.M. McConnell and Ella D. Auchincloss, MTS, will take you through a discussion of each “stream” using sources that reflect the tradition and selections from the Bible. This is primarily a study about prayer and the devotional life as it has been embodied by some of the most revered authors of devotional literature in Christian history. It is intended to heighten not only your knowledge of the Christian faith but to also focus you on the life and person of Jesus of Nazareth, who embodies the finest in all of these traditions. Each class will begin with a brief introduction of the tradition. The group shall read a short excerpt from the selected author followed by a discussion of reflection questions and suggested exercises. The course material comes from the RENOVARE Resource for Spiritual Renewal curriculum founded by Richard J. Foster. RENOVARE is an intra-church movement working for the renewal of the Church in all of its multi-faceted expressions. It is strongly recommended that you purchase the following books in order to fully participate in this course: Devotional Classics, edited by Richard J. Foster and James Bryan Smith, (HarperSanFrancisco, 2005). Streams of Living Water, Richard J. Foster (HarperSanFrancisco, 1998). We will have copies available for purchase at the beginning of the course but they are easily obtained at Amazon.com. All sessions will meet after the 10:30am service and end no later then 1pm and will be held in the back classroom. Schedule of Remaining Dates and Class Topics: November 12th: The Incarnational Tradition with writings from Dag Hammarskjold (Note: Author selections subject to change) Please contact Ella
Auchincloss (eauchincloss@comcast.net
or (617) 734-4302) or Dorsey McConnell for more details and look for a more
detailed discussion of the course on the Redeemer website. Please notify the church office if you are in need of childcare in order to attend the Adult Education class. |

Collection for St. John the Evangelist (Episcopal) in Boston For many years the Redeemer has gathered food for the Thanksgiving meal that is prepared and served by Neighborhood Action, Inc., which operates as the social ministry arm of the Church of St. John the Evangelist on Bowdoin Street in Boston. St. John’s and Neighborhood Action provides food, comfort, counseling and fellowship for the poor, homeless, and elderly living around the Boston Common and Beacon Hill. This is a small organization that operates on a small budget. Sadly, St. John’s is not doing a Thanksgiving Dinner this year due to a budget deficit and the loss of staff which would make putting it all together just impossible. They have had to also suspend their daily noontime meal in order to save the 2 evening meals they provide and the other smaller programs they do. On Wednesdays, they will still offer their food pantry that generates up to 150 bags of nonperishable groceries a month. On Thursdays they have a women’s only drop-in group, and they also continue to offer a Substance Abuse Program and Spirituality Group. I spoke with the Rev. Ron Tibbetts, who runs Neighborhood Action, and he was thrilled that the Redeemer would organize a collection of “necessity items for the homeless” in lieu of a collection of food for the Thanksgiving Meal. We have outlined below how you can help!
Donate to the Homeless at St. John’s: It’s Easy to Contribute! Items that Are Needed
* These are not necessities but it makes a homeless person feel a lot better about life!
· Please help us by picking up a donation bag at the November 5th or 12th Services. Members of the Outreach Committee will be handing out the bags. On the bags will be listed specific items needed for the homeless. (For example: Socks, disposable razors, or Hot Packs).
· Bring your items back to church by November 19th and leave them in the back hall way across from the Parish Hall. Members of the Outreach Committee will sort everything and deliver the items to St. John’s on Tuesday November 21st.
· Equally important, St. John’s always appreciates financial contributions of any amount to help St. John’s in their on-going efforts to help the homeless. If you don’t have time to shop, a contribution of any amount is always appreciated. Checks should be made out to Neighborhood Action Inc.
· If you have any questions please contact Laura Patton (laurated@rcn.com or 617-232-5175 or Jim Huston (Jhuston@emdlexigen.com or 617-244-0292. |
