Ash Wednesday

The Beginning of Lent

February 13, 2002

Services at the Church of the Redeemer

12:00 pm    Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes

7:30 pm      Holy Eucharist with hymns, Imposition of Ashes

Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting.  This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism.  It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church.  Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word.  And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer.

-From the Book of Common Prayer

The Five Sundays of Lent

The unifying theme of our preaching this year for all the five Sundays of Lent is THE MINISTRY of the BAPTIZED.  Lay people as well as clergy share ministry in the Church and the world.  Our ministry takes many forms, and we have assembled a group of people as our preachers on Lent Sundays, whose stories reveal unique as well as traditional ministries.

 GUEST PREACHERS

Sunday, February 17, 2002

The Rev. Robert Ives is a graduate of Deerfield Academy, Bowdoin College, and the University of Edinburgh where he earned his Master of Divinity degree in 1973.  He married his wife Ruth in the same year, and they returned to Maine to serve as ministers on Monhegan Island.  Bob was ordained in the United Church of Christ on Monhegan in 1974.  In 1975 the Iveses moved to another coastal island, Moscongus, commuting weekly in a “peapod” to serve the Sheepscott Community Church.  By 1977 they became ministers of the New Harbor and Around Pond United Methodist churches until 1979 when they began their current ministry at the Carpenter’s Boatshop in Pemaquid.  Following the 10:30 service, Bob and Ruth will hold an Adult Forum in the Parish Hall.

Sunday, March 3, 2002

John H. Finley IV, founding head of the Epiphany School in Dorchester, is no stranger to this parish.  John was raised at the Church of the Redeemer, attended the Groton School and subsequently graduated from Harvard.  John’s ministry among inner-city people began while he was an undergraduate and continues today at the Epiphany School, one of the great ventures that we are proud and pleased to support through Outreach grants as well as volunteer food service and tutoring efforts.  John is sponsored by this parish as a postulant for ordination, a process currently “on hold” given the demands of the Epiphany community, now housed in its brand new building at Shawmut Station in Dorchester.

 Sunday, March 17, 2002

Eric T. Fossel, a long-time member of this parish, holds two doctorates, one from Yale, the other from Harvard.  In addition he earned his Master of Theology degree from Harvard in 2000.  Eric’s work as a scientist found him as a teacher and researcher in Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, Biophysics, and Radiology at Harvard Medical School as well as the College.  Alongside Eric’s expertise in the sciences he has followed the role of his own Christian faith.  Upon entering the Divinity School he began to articulate his views on the role of religion within science.  Currently the president of his own company, Strategic Science and Technologies in Wellesley, Dr. Fossel continues his abiding interest in science and religion.  He has served as clerk of the vestry at this church and is a member of the Fellowship of St. John the Evangelist.

Wednesday Evening Lent Series:

“Religious Pluralism in our Time ”

6:30 PM:  Table Eucharist

7:00 PM: Dinner

7:30 to 8:30PM: Presentation

Increasingly our nation finds itself in parallel with the world in the variety of different religions present and growing in the U. S.  As Christians, as Episcopalians, we cannot thrive in isolation from others.  So it is that we ask the question posed by Professor Diana L. Eck of Harvard: “How do I articulate my faith in a world in which neighbors, colleagues, and students live deeply religious lives in other communities of faith?”  Our challenge is to learn as much as we can from reliable spokespeople for those ‘other communities of faith’.  Five evenings can but begin the task, yet we shall be enriched by this opportunity to begin our journey through faiths.

February 20:  Judaism with Kasey Kaufman:  Kasey Kaufman is a familiar face to Boston television viewers since joining WBZ-TV 4 in January 1986 as a news anchor and reporter.  A graduate of the University of California in Los Angeles, Kasey also studied at Pembroke College, Cambridge University.  With her family she lives in our neighborhood and is a friend to many people in this parish.  A practicing Jew, she will share with us her personal faith, commitment, and experiences in the greater ecumenical community.  Kasey Kaufman is the co-founder of the Max Warburg Courage Curriculum, a literacy program in the Boston Public Schools.

February 27:  Islam I with the Rev. Anne M. Minton:  Anne Minton holds a PhD from New York University and a Master of Theology from Andover-Newton.  Ordained an Episcopal priest in 1994, she served parishes in Concord, N.H. and Attleboro, MA. In 1996 she became rector of Christ Church in Somerville where she remained until 2000.  At present the Rev. Ms. Minton is professor of History and Religion at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston.  She will lead two evenings in our Series.

March 6:  Islam II with the Rev. Anne M. Minton:

March 13:  Buddhism with Karen Anne Derris:  Since 2000, having earned her PhD at Harvard University, Karen Derris has remained in Cambridge to serve as lecturer in Buddhist Studies, Committee on the Study of Religion, at Harvard. She teaches introductory courses and advanced seminars for undergraduates and graduate students on Buddhism, South and Southeast Asian religious tradition, comparative ethics, and methods and theories in religious studies.  A magna cum laude graduate of Brown University, Karen Derris also holds the Master of Theology degree from Harvard Divinity School.

March 20:  Christianity and our Neighbors with the Rev. Richard H. Downes:  Rector of the Church of the Redeemer, and participating in his eighth Lenten Series with us, Dick Downes is a ‘cradle Episcopalian’ whose personal knowledge of neighboring religions, save for Judaism, no doubt parallels that of many fellow- Christians in its incompleteness.  Pluralism is perforce a late but important understanding for this, our final speaker in the Lent Series.  The Rev. Mr. Downes is a graduate of Bowdoin College and the General Theological Seminary.
