Reflection on Church Camp Experience - Redeemer News, October 2002

As I reflect on my experiences growing up as a teen, some of my most vivid memories that really shaped my attitudes and behaviors occurred for one week each summer during my senior high years. That's when I attended the Senior High Adventure Camp hosted by my church camping program. The leader of the camp was an ordained minister who looked more like a mountain man, with his bushy beard, denim jeans and cowboy boots. But underneath that rugged look was an inpiring spiritual leader and mentor who, each summer, led about 16 of us on an amazing set of experiences climbing sheer rocks walls and 10,000 foot mountains, navigating cold white waters and crystal blue lakes, while at the same time thoughtfully exploring many of the mountains and choppy waters of our spiritual and psychological lives. Although most of my camping mates came from different parts of the state, they immediately became some of my closest friends throughout high school and well beyond. Those experiences taught me there is something incredible about the bonds forged between people when, in the face of difficult physical or psychological challenges, they can rely on one another in the context of a caring spiritual community.

One of my greatest hopes for our new Camp & Conference Center is that people from across our Diocese get to experience that same kind of profound spiritual community with others who may share little in common, other than the week they spend together stretching their psychological and spiritual limits.

Note: As a way of better understanding of what a church camp site/program can mean to the people of our parish, we'd like to share one personal experience each month in the Redeemer News. If would like to share one of yours, please contact Donna Robinson or Erik Britt-Webb or email us at camp@redeemerchestnuthill.org.
